New Xpeng P5 EV: Chinese Tesla Model 3 rival lands in Europe

Customers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands can enjoy a 289-mile range with an electric saloon

As the Chinese company continues to expand its ambitious expansion strategy, reservations for the new XpengP5 saloon in select European markets are being accepted.

The company’s third model will follow the Xpeng G3 SUV, and the larger Xpeng P7 saloon to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark later in the year. It will be a competitor to the BMW i4 or Tesla Model 3 and start at EUR48,000 (PS39.898).

The four-door P5 has a more traditional appearance than Xpeng’s previous two models. It can seat up to five people and offers 510 litres of storage space.

It is also said to have a drag coefficient 0.223Cd making it one the most aerodynamically efficient cars of its class.

Xpeng’s Xpilot 2.5 driver assistance system is available to European models. The system does not include the lidar-based features that are available in Chinese models with the more advanced Xpilot 3.5, but it retains five high definition millimetre-wave radar units and 12 ultrasonic waves sensors. It also has four driving cameras, nine high-perception cameras, and a further nine.

The front-wheel-drive P5 is powered by one electric motor that produces 208bhp, 229lb ft and 229 lb ft. Officially, it can go from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 93 mph.

The G3’s dedicated EV platform is the basis of the new volume-market Xpeng Xpeng model.

It is European-specified and comes with a 66.0kWh lithium ion batteries that can provide a range of up 289 miles using the WLTP test procedure.
